The Layover
The legend of “Jim’s Original” started over 70 years ago, when a young,
bright-eyed European immigrant named “Jimmy” arrived in America. Once in
Chicago, Jimmy began working at a small hot dog stand on the bustling corners
of Maxwell and Halsted Streets.
Jimmy’s Red Hots is a Chicago Land hot dog stand located on Chicago’s West
Side. Jimmy’s location would be considered in between Garfield and Humbolt
Parks. Located at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Pulaski, Jimmy’s has
called this intersection home for over 55 years. We go back to when Pulaski was
still called Crawford!
Best Italian Beef I have ever eaten. If the Travel Network wanted to do others
favors they would send them here instead of the more promoted places, i.e. Al’s
and Mr. Beef.
Kuma’s offers the finest fare for burger lovers in all of Chicago. For the last
five years, we’ve been cranking out some of the most creative, mouthwatering
burgers this side of Jupiter. Whether you want to be immersed in heavy metal
culture or you are just looking for the best burger you’ve ever eaten in your
life, Kuma’s Corner has all of the ducks in a row to satiate your most intimate
meat craving desires. That said, we do have some rules we’d appreciate you
abide by:
After walking up Halsted searching for a place to kill a couple of hours before
continuing my journey out of state and only seeing one lame bar after the
other, I figured I might as well walk the four blocks back and save myself from
more disappointment.
I’m told this is the classic Second City bar for performers, friends, etc.
It’ll definitely get the job done if you need a beer or three after seeing some
improv (especially if you’ve just gone to see your friend’s improv show and
have to convince him how good it was…awkward). Not a ton of seating, but if
you lurk long enough, you’ll be able to score a table or bench or three.
I think Simon’s finally clinches it. I’m just not into dive bars. There is
nothing overly wrong with this place, aside from a slight odor that defines
dive bars.
Trendy, no frills place. We were out bar hopping and came across this cute
spot. It felt very cozy and inviting. Located on the south end of Halsted
avenue, near chinatown. They have a buttload of different types of beers to
try. They run daily specials too.
Welcome to Sweet Maple Cafe.Located in a modest storefront on Taylor St.,
Sweet Maple is one of Chicago’s favorite restaurants. Each day business owners,
police officers, professors, students, retirees, and tourists, gather to create
a community that is uniquely “Sweet Maple”. Some come for the ’40s era
background. Others come to chat with our friendly staff. But they all come for
the authentic “taste of home” found only at Sweet Maple Cafe.
Pho had very flavorful soup and the beef was very tender.
I dig it. They do a pretty great version of my #2 favorite food (tacos al
pastor), topped with cilantro and onions only, as should be. The jalapeno salsa
(which is usually green, but was red tonight because they got red jalapenos)
has a fiery kick that I welcomed with an open mouth.

It’s a dark night in Chicago, and you find yourself on a stretch of Western
Avenue without much going on, and out of the gloom you see a small group of
people smoking cigarettes on the sidewalk and hear blasting music roaring out
onto the street. You have made it to the Mutiny.
From the team that created Blackbird and avec restaurants, The Publican is a
new beer-focused restaurant located at 837 W. Fulton Market in Chicago.
Executive Chef Paul Kahan and Chef de Cuisine Brian Huston crafted an eclectic
menu inspired by simple farmhouse fare in a space evocative of a European beer
hall. Designed by James Beard Award-Winner Thomas Schlesser, The Publican
features the same simple lines and strong design elements that made the
architect’s long-time partnership with Design…
The dumplings are so good here. I want to go back and try them all.
My boyfriend and I really love this place, but I would love it more if they had
kept the vegetarian seitan/cheesesteak sandwich. I get it, the chef does what
he wants, but lots and lots of people love this sandwich including my
non-vegetarian boyfriend.
Outstanding meal.We went post-show and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Great
wine list of small producers, staff was knowledgeable about the wines and how
they might pair with the meal.
The atmosphere is awesome and reminiscent of a lounge. There’s one huge screen
playing KPop music videos and a few smaller ones airing sports games. We came
with a huge group and ordered one of everything off the menu.
Excellent food, excellent service!
Chef Ken is a true gentleman and Southern hospitality lives here in Mount Airy!
Coming from a Polish family in New Jersey, pierogies have always been a staple
at our Xmas eve dinners. My grandparents would buy them from the polish ladies
who made them in the church basement, and our meal would also include some
kielbasa from the butcher, and home made stuffed cabbage. In a recent year,
the church basement had water damage, and the pierogie making equipment was
compromised, and we went elsewhere… and they were not the same. I learned
that it’s hard to produce…
