Swan Oyster Depot

Swan Oyster Depot is a food landmark in the city and it’s a surprise that it has taken me this long to try. I liken it to visiting Alcatraz. Tourists from all over line up to try it, but locals tend to stay away. The major hurdle for me has been the line. It took nearly an hour to get three stools at the very end of the long bar.

The thing I love about this place is its iconic look. It seems as if nothing has changed for the past hundred years from the friendly service to the way they handle the check (written on the back of a napkin and cash only). It’s something everyone must try once.

We started our late lunch with the clam chowder. This is classic clam chowder at its finest. You get plenty of flavor without the thick, creamy texture. Add on the sliced sourdough bread and you have the perfect starter. Next, we had the crab cocktail. Simple, fresh crabmeat served in a glass cup with a side of tartar sauce.

Lastly, we had an order of a dozen mixed oysters sans the smaller kumamotos. The oysters were some of the best I’ve ever had. Since our server was late on our order of oysters, our Anchor Steam beer was on the house. That’s the kind of service that will keep this local to go back.
